Medway LARC Training Programme

We encourage the uptake of Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) for all women, and especially for young people.

We provide free training to GPs, Associate Physicians and Practice Nurses in the fitting of LARC methods, and support any training around contraception and sexual health in general. We can also provide support to clinicians needing information regarding specific patients and their contraceptive needs.

For Medway Clinicians we offer free training with a Faculty Registered Trainer for the Letter of Competencies (LoC’s) in both Sub-dermal implants (SDI-R) and Intrauterine Techniques (IUT). We also offer the Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare for which there is a charge of £350.

Introducing Sarah Perkins as our new Clinical Nurse Specialist for the GP LARC Programme in Medway:

She has recently moved into this role after being the Locality Nurse Manager for Sexual Health services across Medway for the past 8 years and therefore has a wide range of experience to support colleagues in primary care to train and promote LARC as an integral part of their SRH provision.

Some colleagues may also remember her as Sarah Patterson, Practice Nurse in Medway.

She is very keen to support Medway GPs, Practice nurses and AHPs to make sure contraception is delivered locally by a clinician that women want to see and also trust. Timely access to the longer acting methods represents a hugely cost-effective strategy in the longer term due to the reduction in face to face follow up required for a period of 3-10 years. Not to mention the long-term psychological burden of an unwanted pregnancy or TOP.

I am here to support training requests for the SDI LoC, IUT LoC and DFSRH and for Medway practitioners the clinical element of the training for both SDI’s and IUT remains free.

If you have an interest in LARC provision and would like to join a FITTER FORUM please do contact me as I would like to set these back up as a support network.

I would also be interested to know if you would like to meet up at Clover St clinic or continue online meetings . As soon as we have confirmed dates for the Fitter Forums we will circulate these.

You are also invited to attend my LAUNCH event to take place at Bridgewood Manor hotel on Tuesday 12th July from 7pm onwards.

We will have an expert guest speaker Dr Ali Kubba, MB ChB FRCOG FFSRH, Guys and St Thomas’, Consultant gynaecologist, colposcopist, and sexual and reproductive health specialist, delivering a CONTRACEPTIVE UPDATE with Q and A session to follow .

This will also be an opportunity for me to meet you and offer support for current fitters moving forward. I will also be available to answer any questions about the Medway LARC training programme.

This evening event will be sponsored by Gedeon Richter with a 3 course menu including red and white house wine. There is no cost associated with attending this meeting.

Invitation to follow, confirmation of attendance will be required, please respond by email to register your interest – Helen.Garbacz@nhs.net
