Overview

This is a course is designed for registered practitioners new to respiratory disease assessment, treatment, and management.


The full-day will focus on the theoretical knowledge base and the half day will focus on competency assessment.


This course will enable you to run a respiratory clinic in primary care general practice. The four unit this programme covers:


Unit 1 - Basic Respiratory/Differential Diagnosis Assessment Skills (1 full day and 1 half day) Unit 2 - Basic Asthma (1 full day and 1 half day)

Unit 3 - COPD (1 full day and 1 half day)

Unit 4 - Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological Management of Respiratory Diseases (1 full day and 1 half day)


Learning Outcomes

  • The Basic Respiratory/Differential Diagnosis Assessment Skills session is to teach healthcare professionals how to carry out a basic respiratory assessment including taking a detailed history and understanding the relevance of the information given, observation skills, required monitoring such as oxygen saturations, auscultation, basic lung function testing.

  • The Asthma session is to increase the healthcare professional’s knowledge and understanding of asthma so that they can correctly differentiate between asthma and other respiratory diseases and manage their asthmatic patient in line with national guidelines.

  • The Basic COPD session is to ensure clinicians are up to date with national COPD guidelines and can put these into clinical practice.

  • The Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological Management of Respiratory Diseases session is to give clinicians good practical and theoretical knowledge of common respiratory drugs and inhalers and to convey the importance of chest clearance and breathlessness management.
