Prescriptions and Prescribing Explained: Suitable for Prescription Clerks and Administrators

This brand-new course has been developed in partnership with the Head of Medicines Management team for Prescription Clerks and those dealing with prescriptions who may be new to practice or just looking for a refresher.


This course will enable delegates to understand the development and classifications of medicines together with the role and responsibilities of the prescription clerk/administrator and help delegates ensure that their role contributes to the safe, efficient and cost-effective running of the general practice prescribing process.


By the end of the course delegates will be able to:

Understand how medicines are developed

Understand the terms generic, brand and branded generic and their use

Recognise the classification of medicines

Determine medicine and prescription terminology and abbreviations

Identify the journey of a prescription

Understand the role of the CCG Medicines Management Team

Understand the role of the general practice prescription clerk/administrator and the responsibilities and limitations including confidentiality, safety and security, reducing medicine waste and competence to undertake the role.


We have also produced an accompanying e-Learning course designed to give you a taster into Prescription Terminology, Drug Prefixes, Suffixed and Roots as well as General Name Endings.
